02:00dominated my life to try to avoid dominated my life to try to avoid discomfort discomfort discomfort and uh whenever i was in my late 20s and uh whenever i was in my late 20s and uh whenever i was in my late 20s i decided to make a change and i decided to make a change and i decided to make a change and so i realized that no matter how so i realized that no matter how so i realized that no matter how far or how hard you try to run from far or how hard you try to run from far or how hard you try to run from discomfort it's always going to chase discomfort it's always going to chase discomfort it's always going to chase after you after you after you and what i what i always wondered was and what i what i always wondered was and what i what i always wondered was why it is that you know a lot of these why it is that you know a lot of these why it is that you know a lot of these things that cause discomfort are things that cause discomfort are things that cause discomfort are what people encourage me to do like the what people encourage me to do like the what people encourage me to do like the first thing i really first thing i really first thing i really tried was exercise which i tried to tried was exercise which i tried to tried was exercise which i tried to avoid that as much as i could early on avoid that as much as i could early on avoid that as much as i could early on and what you're doing of course you're and what you're doing of course you're and what you're doing of course you're stressing your body and if you stress stressing your body and if you stress stressing your body and if you stress your body your body your body in the right amount you get stronger in the right amount you get stronger in the right amount you get stronger healthier faster all these healthier faster all these healthier faster all these great benefits your cardiovascular great benefits your cardiovascular great benefits your cardiovascular system all these things system all these things system all these things they improve and i they improve and i they improve and i started to do that i started to notice started to do that i started to notice started to do that i started to notice benefits and then i got benefits and then i got benefits and then i got into i tried to get into meditation but into i tried to get into meditation but into i tried to get into meditation but let me tell you i was terrible at it let me tell you i was terrible at it let me tell you i was terrible at it and so and so i started researching

04:00ice to skin ice bathing but he had gone ice to skin ice bathing but he had gone to science and he had shown to science and he had shown to science and he had shown that we're capable of influencing our that we're capable of influencing our that we're capable of influencing our autonomic nervous system autonomic nervous system autonomic nervous system and therefore our immune system and therefore our immune system and therefore our immune system this blew my mind and this is what got this blew my mind and this is what got this blew my mind and this is what got me into me into me into these things where okay a cold shower these things where okay a cold shower these things where okay a cold shower an ice bath they're not comfortable an ice bath they're not comfortable an ice bath they're not comfortable but the body the way the body responds but the body the way the body responds but the body the way the body responds is incredible is incredible is incredible and so i started really into the cold and so i started really into the cold and so i started really into the cold that was that's that's been the thing that was that's that's been the thing that was that's that's been the thing that that that it really got me into realizing it really got me into realizing it really got me into realizing that we as human beings need stress that we as human beings need stress that we as human beings need stress we need stressors um obviously you know we need stressors um obviously you know we need stressors um obviously you know i think stress just in general i think stress just in general i think stress just in general um of course we it gets a bad name right um of course we it gets a bad name right um of course we it gets a bad name right because because because we're under chronic stress uh a person we're under chronic stress uh a person we're under chronic stress uh a person goes to work goes to work goes to work they drive to the office they do all they drive to the office they do all they drive to the office they do all these things and
05:00these things and these things and you know we we feel that effect of you know we we feel that effect of you know we we feel that effect of chronic stress in the modern world chronic stress in the modern world chronic stress in the modern world especially because it's just all around especially because it's just all around especially because it's just all around us us us but what what we also know but what what we also know but what what we also know is that there are certain stressors that is that there are certain stressors that is that there are certain stressors that lead to a process called hormesis lead to a process called hormesis lead to a process called hormesis and this is the strange thing about and this is the strange thing about and this is the strange thing about living creatures that if you give a living creatures that if you give a living creatures that if you give a little bit of little bit of little bit of stress or just right right it has to be stress or just right right it has to be stress or just right right it has to be enough enough enough it can't be too much but if you give us it can't be too much but if you give us it can't be too much but if you give us just the right amount of stress just the right amount of stress just the right amount of stress we become stronger and so we become stronger and so we become stronger and so my first foray into that was my first foray into that was my first foray into that was with the cold and with breath work with the cold and with breath work with the cold and with breath work and then i realized well okay um and then i realized well okay um and then i realized well okay um there's these things called saunas and there's these things called saunas and there's these things called saunas and steam rooms out there steam rooms out there steam rooms out there and so i started experimenting with and so i started experimenting with and so i started experimenting with those as well now i haven't gotten as those as well now i haven't gotten as those as well now i haven't gotten as far as far as far as i'm gonna i'm gonna have to ask you some i'm gonna i'm gonna have to ask you some i'm gonna i'm gonna have to ask you some questions because i really questions because i really

09:00well i walked to the shower well i walked to the shower and it was it's only it's almost and it was it's only it's almost and it was it's only it's almost embarrassing to say this story but embarrassing to say this story but embarrassing to say this story but but i walked to the shower and i turned but i walked to the shower and i turned but i walked to the shower and i turned the knob the knob the knob and as i was turning i said whip off and as i was turning i said whip off and as i was turning i said whip off almost like some kind of incantation or almost like some kind of incantation or almost like some kind of incantation or something like that i was like okay something like that i was like okay something like that i was like okay here's my power here's my power here's my power whim up and i turned it and whim up and i turned it and whim up and i turned it and the cold water hit my skin and the cold water hit my skin and the cold water hit my skin and it was almost like in the cartoons where it was almost like in the cartoons where it was almost like in the cartoons where the skeleton leaves the body the skeleton leaves the body the skeleton leaves the body and i just didn't like the cold at all and i just didn't like the cold at all and i just didn't like the cold at all absolutely hated the cold and um i was absolutely hated the cold and um i was absolutely hated the cold and um i was like okay there's no way like okay there's no way like okay there's no way how is anybody gonna do this and so for how is anybody gonna do this and so for how is anybody gonna do this and so for a long time i just a long time i just a long time i just you know i just did the breath work but you know i just did the breath work but you know i just did the breath work but eventually one day i decided eventually one day i decided eventually one day i decided i've got to get into this um and i've got to get into this um and i've got to get into this um and so i went to the shower one day actually so i went to the shower one day actually so i went to the shower one day actually it was after i had it was after i had it was after i had done some mowing i'd mowed the grass and done some mowing i'd mowed the grass and done some mowing i'd mowed the grass and i i i have always had lifelong allergies my have always had lifelong allergies my have always had lifelong allergies my whole life whole life whole life seasonal allergies all kinds of
10:00seasonal allergies all kinds of seasonal allergies all kinds of allergies allergies allergies and so year-round i normally take and so year-round i normally take and so year-round i normally take medicine but if anybody listens to this medicine but if anybody listens to this medicine but if anybody listens to this you know and you're you know and you're you know and you're you you have allergies a lot of times you you have allergies a lot of times you you have allergies a lot of times even though you're taking medicine even though you're taking medicine even though you're taking medicine you still feel terrible and so i was you still feel terrible and so i was you still feel terrible and so i was just in an awful way and i walked in and just in an awful way and i walked in and just in an awful way and i walked in and i said i'm gonna try this cold shower i said i'm gonna try this cold shower i said i'm gonna try this cold shower thing thing thing and so i went into the shower and i and so i went into the shower and i and so i went into the shower and i started warm started warm started warm and i kind of just slowly went a little and i kind of just slowly went a little and i kind of just slowly went a little bit more cold a little bit more cold bit more cold a little bit more cold bit more cold a little bit more cold and i didn't even get all the way cold and i didn't even get all the way cold and i didn't even get all the way cold that day but i found that day but i found that day but i found my place and i found a place where i was my place and i found a place where i was my place and i found a place where i was uncomfortable uncomfortable uncomfortable but i could tolerate it it wasn't but i could tolerate it it wasn't but i could tolerate it it wasn't and so then the next day i came back and and so then the next day i came back and and so then the next day i came back and the next day i came back the next day i came back the next day i came back and before you know it i'm taking and before you know it i'm taking and before you know it i'm taking completely cold all the way to cold completely cold all the way to cold completely cold all the way to cold showers showers showers the seasons are starting to change i'm the seasons are starting to change i'm the seasons are starting to change i'm getting into getting into getting into the fall before you know it the colder the fall before you know it the colder the fall before you know it the colder the the outside temperatures the colder the the outside temperatures the colder the the outside temperatures the colder the water i could handle

12:00you have to decide right then and there you have to decide right then and there that you're going to love the cold and i that you're going to love the cold and i that you're going to love the cold and i know that sounds know that sounds know that sounds i know it sounds like a big ask but i know it sounds like a big ask but i know it sounds like a big ask but but you have to decide and because as but you have to decide and because as but you have to decide and because as long as you are resisting the cold as long as you are resisting the cold as long as you are resisting the cold as long as you are long as you are long as you are uh trying to grin and bear it and grit uh trying to grin and bear it and grit uh trying to grin and bear it and grit your teeth and things like that your teeth and things like that your teeth and things like that you're never going to see progress you're never going to see progress you're never going to see progress what's really going to make you see what's really going to make you see what's really going to make you see progress is say progress is say progress is say i am voluntarily doing this because i i am voluntarily doing this because i i am voluntarily doing this because i want to do it so that's tip number one want to do it so that's tip number one want to do it so that's tip number one decide to love the cold um decide to love the cold um decide to love the cold um and then and then the the second tip is and then and then the the second tip is and then and then the the second tip is to always be safe to always be safe to always be safe so so always choose a safe way so so always choose a safe way so so always choose a safe way to experience the cold so for instance to experience the cold so for instance to experience the cold so for instance uh we were just talking before we uh we were just talking before we uh we were just talking before we started recording it started recording it started recording it you you live near a bunch of lakes and you you live near a bunch of lakes and you you live near a bunch of lakes and i would not suggest you know in the i would not suggest you know in the i would not suggest you know in the middle of february middle of february middle of february for a person to go to the middle of a for a person to go to the middle of a for a person to go to the middle of a lake that is frozen over and jump in
13:00lake that is frozen over and jump in lake that is frozen over and jump in without ever trying cold exposure now without ever trying cold exposure now without ever trying cold exposure now you want to try something where you want to try something where you want to try something where you're especially if you're not outside you're especially if you're not outside you're especially if you're not outside a place where a place where a place where you can you can you can adjust that you can you can you can adjust that you can you can you can adjust that temperature if you want to or you can temperature if you want to or you can temperature if you want to or you can just just simply step outside i always recommend simply step outside i always recommend simply step outside i always recommend cold showers cold showers cold showers or cold baths to start but you want to or cold baths to start but you want to or cold baths to start but you want to make sure you're in a safe place because make sure you're in a safe place because make sure you're in a safe place because you are you are you are dealing with a potentially lethal force dealing with a potentially lethal force dealing with a potentially lethal force you know hypothermia is a real thing and you know hypothermia is a real thing and you know hypothermia is a real thing and so so so it's generally not going to be a problem it's generally not going to be a problem it's generally not going to be a problem as long as you just take some steps to as long as you just take some steps to as long as you just take some steps to make it make it make it safe so so always be safe air on the safe so so always be safe air on the safe so so always be safe air on the side of caution side of caution side of caution and then the third one really links back and then the third one really links back and then the third one really links back to the first one to the first one to the first one but i i like to say them separately but i i like to say them separately but i i like to say them separately oftentimes because oftentimes because oftentimes because um when i coach people i i want you to um when i coach people i i want you to um when i coach people i i want you to make make make it into a joyful experience it into a joyful experience it into a joyful experience and one of the things that i really and one of the things that i really and one of the things that i really um and this is not something everybody
14:00um and this is not something everybody um and this is not something everybody intuitively thinks to do because you see intuitively thinks to do because you see intuitively thinks to do because you see the people the people the people meditating in the snow um so so much of meditating in the snow um so so much of meditating in the snow um so so much of the talk around the talk around the talk around cold training and i don't disagree with cold training and i don't disagree with cold training and i don't disagree with it but it but it but but so much of the talk about cold but so much of the talk about cold but so much of the talk about cold training is it is that it's very training is it is that it's very training is it is that it's very meditative very peaceful and serene meditative very peaceful and serene meditative very peaceful and serene and i don't disagree with that however and i don't disagree with that however and i don't disagree with that however it's important i think to make it fun so it's important i think to make it fun so it's important i think to make it fun so i would recommend listening to music i would recommend listening to music i would recommend listening to music um and just something that's enjoyable i um and just something that's enjoyable i um and just something that's enjoyable i and i used to listen to just silly you and i used to listen to just silly you and i used to listen to just silly you know cheesy 80s know cheesy 80s know cheesy 80s rock or you know something that is just rock or you know something that is just rock or you know something that is just kind of fun you know kind of fun you know kind of fun you know sing along and it makes the whole sing along and it makes the whole sing along and it makes the whole experience better because you want to experience better because you want to experience better because you want to basically you're training yourself basically you're training yourself basically you're training yourself to look at the cold in a different way to look at the cold in a different way to look at the cold in a different way and once you do that and once you do that and once you do that you're going to see incredible benefits you're going to see incredible benefits you're going to see incredible benefits because you're going to progress a lot because you're going to progress a lot because you're going to progress a lot more and really more and really more and really 90 percent of cold training is

20:00approximately approximately right around 35 to 40 degrees fahrenheit right around 35 to 40 degrees fahrenheit right around 35 to 40 degrees fahrenheit um and so so very very very um and so so very very very um and so so very very very cold ice baths especially when you cold ice baths especially when you cold ice baths especially when you consider consider consider i know i talked to a lot of athletes who i know i talked to a lot of athletes who i know i talked to a lot of athletes who have taken ice baths as part of their have taken ice baths as part of their have taken ice baths as part of their training regimen training regimen training regimen and maybe they were like well i was in and maybe they were like well i was in and maybe they were like well i was in one for a half hour at one time one for a half hour at one time one for a half hour at one time and oftentimes there's a confusion on and oftentimes there's a confusion on and oftentimes there's a confusion on okay what is an ice bath okay what is an ice bath okay what is an ice bath um and so like an athletic ice bath is um and so like an athletic ice bath is um and so like an athletic ice bath is usually usually usually around 60 degrees fahrenheit maybe as around 60 degrees fahrenheit maybe as around 60 degrees fahrenheit maybe as low as 50 degrees fahrenheit low as 50 degrees fahrenheit low as 50 degrees fahrenheit so we're talking a big difference here so we're talking a big difference here so we're talking a big difference here and so i was training training training and so i was training training training and so i was training training training i uh i started using the steam room i uh i started using the steam room i uh i started using the steam room about this time the gym i i'm an english about this time the gym i i'm an english about this time the gym i i'm an english professor professor professor is my day job and so the gym at the is my day job and so the gym at the is my day job and so the gym at the at the university has a steam room so i at the university has a steam room so i at the university has a steam room so i was like oh this is really great was like oh this is really great was like oh this is really great and so i started doing contrast therapy and so i started doing contrast therapy and so i started doing contrast therapy i started doing a lot of things uh with i started doing a lot of things uh with i started doing a lot of things uh with that and i continue to learn more about
21:00and i continue to learn more about breath work so the way the human breath work so the way the human breath work so the way the human the the way the human body and mind the the way the human body and mind the the way the human body and mind react to to react to to react to to different forms of breathing but in 2016 different forms of breathing but in 2016 different forms of breathing but in 2016 in november in november in november i climbed the mountain barefoot uh i climbed the mountain barefoot uh i climbed the mountain barefoot uh shirtless shirtless shirtless in freezing temperatures out in colorado in freezing temperatures out in colorado in freezing temperatures out in colorado with wim hof with wim hof with wim hof and uh 25 other americans and uh 25 other americans and uh 25 other americans and uh became one of the very first ever and uh became one of the very first ever and uh became one of the very first ever in the world in the world in the world uh wim hof method instructors um and uh wim hof method instructors um and uh wim hof method instructors um and definitely the first definitely the first definitely the first class of american instructors and so class of american instructors and so class of american instructors and so after that after that after that um that week was just amazing um that week was just amazing um that week was just amazing there was one time i mean there was one time i mean there was one time i mean we just had all kinds of different kinds we just had all kinds of different kinds we just had all kinds of different kinds of challenges of challenges of challenges um one time we were told to go into um one time we were told to go into um one time we were told to go into the uh basic a freezing the uh basic a freezing the uh basic a freezing lake i mean the it was so cold that day lake i mean the it was so cold that day lake i mean the it was so cold that day um that whenever we were we took off all um that whenever we were we took off all um that whenever we were we took off all our clothes you know
22:00our clothes you know our clothes you know except for our trunks and bathing suits except for our trunks and bathing suits except for our trunks and bathing suits like like like your feet would stick to the sand on the your feet would stick to the sand on the your feet would stick to the sand on the beach because it was that cold beach because it was that cold beach because it was that cold and so i couldn't wait to get in the and so i couldn't wait to get in the and so i couldn't wait to get in the water because i knew it was warmer water because i knew it was warmer water because i knew it was warmer strangely enough even though it's strangely enough even though it's strangely enough even though it's freezing so we got in the water but freezing so we got in the water but freezing so we got in the water but he didn't tell us how long we were going he didn't tell us how long we were going he didn't tell us how long we were going to be in there he just said get in to be in there he just said get in to be in there he just said get in and so we really had to fall back on our and so we really had to fall back on our and so we really had to fall back on our training training and this is in it this is the whole and this is in it this is the whole and this is in it this is the whole purpose of it you know we had to realize purpose of it you know we had to realize purpose of it you know we had to realize that that we're really capable of a lot more than we're really capable of a lot more than we're really capable of a lot more than we think we are we think we are we think we are and that if we get out of our and that if we get out of our and that if we get out of our thoughts get out of that thinking thoughts get out of that thinking thoughts get out of that thinking problem solving part of our brain problem solving part of our brain problem solving part of our brain and we get into just the more primal and we get into just the more primal and we get into just the more primal parts of our brain parts of our brain parts of our brain the brain stem the lymph system those the brain stem the lymph system those the brain stem the lymph system those are the parts that can are the parts that can are the parts that can really you know really you know really you know keep us alive and of course keep us from keep us alive and of course keep us from keep us alive and of course keep us from freaking out and that's normally what freaking out and that's normally what freaking out and that's normally what the biggest problem is anyway
23:00the biggest problem is anyway the biggest problem is anyway so he got us out and you know so he got us out and you know so he got us out and you know i forget exactly how long there's i forget exactly how long there's i forget exactly how long there's different reports some people different reports some people different reports some people said it was eight minutes some people said it was eight minutes some people said it was eight minutes some people said it was 14 minutes you know said it was 14 minutes you know said it was 14 minutes you know who knows how long it was that's not the who knows how long it was that's not the who knows how long it was that's not the important part but we got out important part but we got out important part but we got out but we couldn't get dressed though so but we couldn't get dressed though so but we couldn't get dressed though so here we were in this freezing here we were in this freezing here we were in this freezing air and of course wind chill started to air and of course wind chill started to air and of course wind chill started to really take effect hands and feet were really take effect hands and feet were really take effect hands and feet were pretty much pretty much pretty much unusable um and unusable um and unusable um and we started you know to do a we started you know to do a we started you know to do a breathing meditation just right then and breathing meditation just right then and breathing meditation just right then and there in this freezing there in this freezing there in this freezing air and um we started doing air and um we started doing air and um we started doing certain breathing techniques to warm the certain breathing techniques to warm the certain breathing techniques to warm the body and body and body and uh eventually we could put on our uh eventually we could put on our uh eventually we could put on our clothes and i will say clothes and i will say clothes and i will say that i was it was to the point where that i was it was to the point where that i was it was to the point where your focus had to be your focus had to be your focus had to be 100 you you couldn't 100 you you couldn't 100 you you couldn't lose that focus because if you did you lose that focus because if you did you lose that focus because if you did you would just i mean would just i mean would just i mean probably pass out we just had so much

27:00we overuse these things a lot and we overuse these things a lot and there's a lot of negative side effects there's a lot of negative side effects there's a lot of negative side effects and then of course nowadays with um and then of course nowadays with um and then of course nowadays with um addictive opioids and and addictive opioids and and addictive opioids and and drugs it's nice to be able to have drugs it's nice to be able to have drugs it's nice to be able to have something that we can use something that we can use something that we can use that is going to be consistent it's that is going to be consistent it's that is going to be consistent it's going to work every time going to work every time going to work every time and it's not harmful or addictive i mean and it's not harmful or addictive i mean and it's not harmful or addictive i mean it's addictive it's addictive it's addictive in a way right but but but in a way right but but but in a way right but but but cold exposure it's it's kind of it's one cold exposure it's it's kind of it's one cold exposure it's it's kind of it's one of these special things of these special things of these special things that they've shown that um you that they've shown that um you that they've shown that um you your brain will produce norepinephrine your brain will produce norepinephrine your brain will produce norepinephrine in pretty much the exact same way in pretty much the exact same way in pretty much the exact same way for as long as you are in the cold so for as long as you are in the cold so for as long as you are in the cold so for instance for instance for instance you know like for instance if you've you know like for instance if you've you know like for instance if you've taken a a painkiller or some taken a a painkiller or some taken a a painkiller or some some kind of a medicine oftentimes there some kind of a medicine oftentimes there some kind of a medicine oftentimes there is a is a is a law of diminishing returns after a month law of diminishing returns after a month law of diminishing returns after a month after you know x amount of time yes after you know x amount of time yes after you know x amount of time yes you'll get benefits but it's not the you'll get benefits but it's not the you'll get benefits but it's not the same as same as same as as you're gonna have to up the dose or
28:00as you're gonna have to up the dose or as you're gonna have to up the dose or you're gonna you know there's something you're gonna you know there's something you're gonna you know there's something like that's gonna happen like that's gonna happen like that's gonna happen so with cold exposure it's not like that so with cold exposure it's not like that so with cold exposure it's not like that especially when it with regards to especially when it with regards to especially when it with regards to norepinephrine norepinephrine norepinephrine and of course in the states we call it and of course in the states we call it and of course in the states we call it noradrenaline noradrenaline noradrenaline it depends on what paper you're reading it depends on what paper you're reading it depends on what paper you're reading it's the same thing it's the same thing it's the same thing and this chemical in in the brain and this chemical in in the brain and this chemical in in the brain it does a lot of things it it heightens it does a lot of things it it heightens it does a lot of things it it heightens our our our senses and awareness it wakes up our senses and awareness it wakes up our senses and awareness it wakes up our brain quite literally it makes us more brain quite literally it makes us more brain quite literally it makes us more attentive attentive attentive it can it's been linked to the ability it can it's been linked to the ability it can it's been linked to the ability to focus and learn to focus and learn to focus and learn better there's a lot of those things but better there's a lot of those things but better there's a lot of those things but it's also an incredibly powerful it's also an incredibly powerful it's also an incredibly powerful anti-inflammatory and every time you get anti-inflammatory and every time you get anti-inflammatory and every time you get into a cold shower into a cold shower into a cold shower if it's the same temperature for the if it's the same temperature for the if it's the same temperature for the same amount of time same amount of time same amount of time you're going to get the same dose of you're going to get the same dose of you're going to get the same dose of norepinephrine according to research norepinephrine according to research norepinephrine according to research that's been done that's been done that's been done which to me that that's just incredible which to me that that's just incredible which to me that that's just incredible that's something you can rely on for a that's something you can rely on for a that's something you can rely on for a long period of time long period of time long period of time for the i mean the rest of your life if for the i mean the rest of your life if for the i mean the rest of your life if you want to you want to you want to and you're going to get that same dose
