04:00um my family goes on vacation um my family goes on vacation um on the atlantic ocean um on the atlantic ocean um on the atlantic ocean in long island in new york in long island in new york in long island in new york and whenever i have to get into the and whenever i have to get into the and whenever i have to get into the ocean i i've trained myself to know i'm ocean i i've trained myself to know i'm ocean i i've trained myself to know i'm i'm i'm i'm not gonna want to do it not gonna want to do it not gonna want to do it and then i do it and i love it every and then i do it and i love it every and then i do it and i love it every time time time yeah and i come out feeling better yeah and i come out feeling better yeah and i come out feeling better i come out feeling like insulated from i come out feeling like insulated from i come out feeling like insulated from the world and just great the world and just great the world and just great yeah but i don't know why yeah but i don't know why yeah but i don't know why uh uh uh so maybe you can help explain that so maybe you can help explain that so maybe you can help explain that because i think there's something very because i think there's something very because i think there's something very similar similar similar yes and and this is what the wim hof yes and and this is what the wim hof yes and and this is what the wim hof method is all about it's not just to be method is all about it's not just to be method is all about it's not just to be able to conquer the cold the cold is able to conquer the cold the cold is able to conquer the cold the cold is just just just an example of a stressor an example of a stressor an example of a stressor that you have an automatic reaction to that you have an automatic reaction to that you have an automatic reaction to physiologically physiologically and you physiologically physiologically and you physiologically physiologically and you learn to be able to control that learn to be able to control that learn to be able to control that physiological response to that physiological response to that physiological response to that particular stressor particular stressor particular stressor and then you can apply it to other and then you can apply it to other and then you can apply it to other stressors in your life stressors in your life stressors in your life so in the case the reason you feel so so in the case the reason you feel so so in the case the reason you feel so good when you come out of the sea well
05:00good when you come out of the sea well good when you come out of the sea well there's lots of there's lots of there's lots of physiological reasons for that release physiological reasons for that release physiological reasons for that release of the of the of the well they've done studies on on wim hof well they've done studies on on wim hof well they've done studies on on wim hof when he's been in the cold and other when he's been in the cold and other when he's been in the cold and other volunteers that have learnt his method volunteers that have learnt his method volunteers that have learnt his method and they found things like it stimulates and they found things like it stimulates and they found things like it stimulates the periaqueduco grey bit of the brain the periaqueduco grey bit of the brain the periaqueduco grey bit of the brain stem which is where endogenous opioids stem which is where endogenous opioids stem which is where endogenous opioids are produced so you get that euphoric are produced so you get that euphoric are produced so you get that euphoric kind of feel good can be activated when kind of feel good can be activated when kind of feel good can be activated when that system is is tapped into but in in that system is is tapped into but in in that system is is tapped into but in in you going in the sea you going in the sea you going in the sea is an example of when that's a fear is an example of when that's a fear is an example of when that's a fear and despite the fear you go into it with and despite the fear you go into it with and despite the fear you go into it with a mindset of well let's let's give it a a mindset of well let's let's give it a a mindset of well let's let's give it a go anyway even though i'm feeling a bit go anyway even though i'm feeling a bit go anyway even though i'm feeling a bit nervous about it and then you you nervous about it and then you you nervous about it and then you you overcome that fear and it surprises you overcome that fear and it surprises you overcome that fear and it surprises you because you love it so much and you come because you love it so much and you come because you love it so much and you come out and then it leaves you with that out and then it leaves you with that out and then it leaves you with that that sense of power and accomplishment that sense of power and accomplishment that sense of power and accomplishment over that um that perceived fear that over that um that perceived fear that over that um that perceived fear that you started with you started with you started with okay so i certainly i definitely okay so i certainly i definitely okay so i certainly i definitely understand the the euphoria of understand the the euphoria of understand the the euphoria of conquering a fear
06:00conquering a fear conquering a fear that that that that i've experienced many times that i've experienced many times that i've experienced many times but i wonder what is it about the cold but i wonder what is it about the cold but i wonder what is it about the cold because i think about it if i got into because i think about it if i got into because i think about it if i got into like a really hot like a really hot like a really hot um hot tub um hot tub um hot tub i don't come out euphoric from that i don't come out euphoric from that i don't come out euphoric from that you know you know you know and and meanwhile if we were scared and and meanwhile if we were scared and and meanwhile if we were scared about getting into water that was about getting into water that was about getting into water that was boiling we would get into it and boiling we would get into it and boiling we would get into it and actually burn ourselves and not be okay actually burn ourselves and not be okay actually burn ourselves and not be okay so so so there's something going on here and i there's something going on here and i there's something going on here and i i'm very curious what it is i don't even i'm very curious what it is i don't even i'm very curious what it is i don't even know if you can shed light on that maybe know if you can shed light on that maybe know if you can shed light on that maybe to you it's it's every bit as much of to you it's it's every bit as much of to you it's it's every bit as much of mystery as it is to me but mystery as it is to me but mystery as it is to me but i'm curious what i'm curious what i'm curious what what do i make of that what do i make of that what do i make of that yeah well the thing is when we get into yeah well the thing is when we get into yeah well the thing is when we get into hot bath hot bath hot bath um that's inducing a relaxation effect um that's inducing a relaxation effect um that's inducing a relaxation effect which is not exciting excitatory if you which is not exciting excitatory if you which is not exciting excitatory if you like like cold is a shock what you like like cold is a shock what you like like cold is a shock what you experience when you go into cold is a experience when you go into cold is a experience when you go into cold is a shock and it's a stress effect
07:00shock and it's a stress effect shock and it's a stress effect and so that's a different physiology to and so that's a different physiology to and so that's a different physiology to getting into a comfortable warm bath getting into a comfortable warm bath getting into a comfortable warm bath that's that's not creating a stress that's that's not creating a stress that's that's not creating a stress effect that's a that's creating the effect that's a that's creating the effect that's a that's creating the opposite of a stress effect yep i don't opposite of a stress effect yep i don't opposite of a stress effect yep i don't know if this is right and if or if this know if this is right and if or if this know if this is right and if or if this fits with your understanding of it i fits with your understanding of it i fits with your understanding of it i mean it seems like with hot with hot mean it seems like with hot with hot mean it seems like with hot with hot temperatures temperatures temperatures your choices are your choices are your choices are relaxation relaxation relaxation or being burnt or being burnt or being burnt there's there's no there's no in between there's there's no there's no in between there's there's no there's no in between land where you can just have the shock land where you can just have the shock land where you can just have the shock and the overcome and the overcome and the overcome no no that's right that's right but no no that's right that's right but no no that's right that's right but that's because obviously the burn that that's because obviously the burn that that's because obviously the burn that is that that's that is danger that is is that that's that is danger that is is that that's that is danger that is appropriate you know appropriate you know appropriate you know yeah actual danger when we go into cold yeah actual danger when we go into cold yeah actual danger when we go into cold water when we go into cold water for a water when we go into cold water for a water when we go into cold water for a reasonable amount of time it's not too reasonable amount of time it's not too reasonable amount of time it's not too long but that's not actual danger but we long but that's not actual danger but we long but that's not actual danger but we still get that shock stress response if still get that shock stress response if still get that shock stress response if we've been conditioned to we've been conditioned to we've been conditioned to fear it or avoid it or you know that fear it or avoid it or you know that fear it or avoid it or you know that type of thing type of thing type of thing now do you do you know how he discovered
08:00now do you do you know how he discovered now do you do you know how he discovered his method his method his method yeah it's an interesting story um yeah it's an interesting story um yeah it's an interesting story um it's a sad story in that 1995 it's a sad story in that 1995 it's a sad story in that 1995 um his wife committed suicide um his wife committed suicide um his wife committed suicide she actually she actually she actually yeah and and he had he was left with yeah and and he had he was left with yeah and and he had he was left with four children four children four children and he was really devastated and he and he was really devastated and he and he was really devastated and he describes how he you know he just he describes how he you know he just he describes how he you know he just he went into a spin of course went into a spin of course went into a spin of course and somewhere along the line he realized and somewhere along the line he realized and somewhere along the line he realized that one day he jumped into some cold that one day he jumped into some cold that one day he jumped into some cold water water water and it was the first time he just felt and it was the first time he just felt and it was the first time he just felt peace peace peace everything stopped wow everything stopped wow everything stopped wow it was like instantaneous mindfulness it was like instantaneous mindfulness it was like instantaneous mindfulness and and he realized that that was really and and he realized that that was really and and he realized that that was really powerful and that was the first time powerful and that was the first time powerful and that was the first time he'd felt like that he'd felt like that he'd felt like that since that had happened in his life since that had happened in his life since that had happened in his life and then he thought i need more of this and then he thought i need more of this and then he thought i need more of this and and that's kind of where it and and that's kind of where it and and that's kind of where it originated him just discovering the originated him just discovering the originated him just discovering the effect of himself and in quietening his effect of himself and in quietening his effect of himself and in quietening his mind mind mind and how good that felt and how good that felt and how good that felt and so he developed it further from and so he developed it further from and so he developed it further from there
09:00there there so i wanted to make an observation so i wanted to make an observation so i wanted to make an observation based on what you just said and i you based on what you just said and i you based on what you just said and i you know it's funny i had heard i had heard know it's funny i had heard i had heard know it's funny i had heard i had heard that and then i hit i think i forgot it that and then i hit i think i forgot it that and then i hit i think i forgot it because it was too disturbing well that because it was too disturbing well that because it was too disturbing well that was just the kind of thing that happened was just the kind of thing that happened was just the kind of thing that happened to me yeah yeah yeah to me yeah yeah yeah to me yeah yeah yeah but um i was thinking that another but um i was thinking that another but um i was thinking that another aspect of what he must have gotten out aspect of what he must have gotten out aspect of what he must have gotten out of that was that he got out of a certain of that was that he got out of a certain of that was that he got out of a certain type of headspace type of headspace type of headspace you know he he must have been going over you know he he must have been going over you know he he must have been going over and over and over the and over and over the and over and over the the kind of um the kind of um the kind of um cerebral cortex kind of cerebral cortex kind of cerebral cortex kind of processing processing processing of what had happened of what had happened of what had happened and there are so many times when we're and there are so many times when we're and there are so many times when we're kind of sick of it even as a therapist kind of sick of it even as a therapist kind of sick of it even as a therapist there are times where when i go to see there are times where when i go to see there are times where when i go to see my therapist i think my therapist i think my therapist i think i don't want to deal with this i don't i don't want to deal with this i don't i don't want to deal with this i don't want to deal with me you know it's like want to deal with me you know it's like want to deal with me you know it's like i'm done with that type of thing i'm done with that type of thing i'm done with that type of thing and i think i would rather jump in a and i think i would rather jump in a and i think i would rather jump in a bucket of ice not because it's so bad bucket of ice not because it's so bad bucket of ice not because it's so bad but because but because but because we want something different that frees we want something different that frees we want something different that frees us from that and one of the reasons i
10:00us from that and one of the reasons i us from that and one of the reasons i i'm i'm asking this i'm i'm asking this i'm i'm asking this is that in my work with mind body work is that in my work with mind body work is that in my work with mind body work i find something similar is happening i find something similar is happening i find something similar is happening not through shock but it's there's not through shock but it's there's not through shock but it's there's something similar happening something similar happening something similar happening where we get people to concentrate on where we get people to concentrate on where we get people to concentrate on something that's very present and away something that's very present and away something that's very present and away from the way that they normally think from the way that they normally think from the way that they normally think about things and i i wanted to ask you about things and i i wanted to ask you about things and i i wanted to ask you is that part of is that part of is that part of is that part of what you experience in is that part of what you experience in is that part of what you experience in the work that the work that the work that that you do or in the way that you think that you do or in the way that you think that you do or in the way that you think about it about it about it yeah yeah that's right i think that's right i think that's right i think in the in the sense of getting in the in the in the sense of getting in the in the in the sense of getting in the water that shocked him out of his water that shocked him out of his water that shocked him out of his habitual pattern of being in his head habitual pattern of being in his head habitual pattern of being in his head and and in therapy we're trying to in therapy we're trying to in therapy we're trying to change people's habitual change people's habitual change people's habitual sort of churning that's going over and sort of churning that's going over and sort of churning that's going over and diverting them somewhere else and and diverting them somewhere else and and diverting them somewhere else and and cold water is is just one of many cold water is is just one of many cold water is is just one of many different mechanisms i guess different mechanisms i guess different mechanisms i guess to do that um to do that um to do that um creates a situation where creates a situation where creates a situation where when you're in cold water when you're when you're in cold water when you're when you're in cold water when you're having cold showers you're not thinking
11:00having cold showers you're not thinking having cold showers you're not thinking about your worries or anything else you about your worries or anything else you about your worries or anything else you are fully present in the experience of are fully present in the experience of are fully present in the experience of the cold you are fully mindful in that the cold you are fully mindful in that the cold you are fully mindful in that moment and nothing else is going on for moment and nothing else is going on for moment and nothing else is going on for you and in that time gives you a rest you and in that time gives you a rest you and in that time gives you a rest from what he calls the beehive of the from what he calls the beehive of the from what he calls the beehive of the mind which i think is a nice description mind which i think is a nice description mind which i think is a nice description of it so of it so of it so you haven't got that beehive going on you haven't got that beehive going on you haven't got that beehive going on you've got sort of you've got you've got you've got sort of you've got you've got you've got sort of you've got you've got the cold going on and that the cold going on and that the cold going on and that that has got your full attention and that has got your full attention and that has got your full attention and everything else just isn't there in that everything else just isn't there in that everything else just isn't there in that moment moment moment and that sounds like that rings pretty and that sounds like that rings pretty and that sounds like that rings pretty true to what you have experienced true to what you have experienced true to what you have experienced yourself that when you do it yes yourself that when you do it yes yourself that when you do it yes yes can you describe it a little bit yes can you describe it a little bit yes can you describe it a little bit well yeah so actually well yeah so actually well yeah so actually describe the first time if you remember describe the first time if you remember describe the first time if you remember it it it yeah okay yeah okay yeah okay so what what it's important to so what what it's important to so what what it's important to understand they've done studies on him understand they've done studies on him understand they've done studies on him and they've just exposed him to water or and they've just exposed him to water or and they've just exposed him to water or they've just done the mindset and then they've just done the mindset and then they've just done the mindset and then cold water or he's just done the cold water or he's just done the cold water or he's just done the breathing cold water and it's basically breathing cold water and it's basically breathing cold water and it's basically you have to do all all the things you have to do all all the things you have to do all all the things together to get the effect
12:00together to get the effect together to get the effect now now now before we go into cold water you do um a before we go into cold water you do um a before we go into cold water you do um a breathing technique breathing technique breathing technique and it's not a relaxation breathing and it's not a relaxation breathing and it's not a relaxation breathing technique it's based on a tibetan fire technique it's based on a tibetan fire technique it's based on a tibetan fire breathing so it's lots of big full breathing so it's lots of big full breathing so it's lots of big full breaths breaths breaths for you know lots of them about 30 of for you know lots of them about 30 of for you know lots of them about 30 of them them them and then you hold then you breathe out and then you hold then you breathe out and then you hold then you breathe out and you hold your breath for a minute and you hold your breath for a minute and you hold your breath for a minute and then you inhale fully and hold it and then you inhale fully and hold it and then you inhale fully and hold it for 10-15 seconds for 10-15 seconds for 10-15 seconds and then you do it again the the fire and then you do it again the the fire and then you do it again the the fire breathing and each time you hold the breathing and each time you hold the breathing and each time you hold the breath for the next time one and a half breath for the next time one and a half breath for the next time one and a half minutes minutes minutes and then two minutes and then two minutes and then two minutes and then two and a half minutes and then two and a half minutes and then two and a half minutes and so you're building up your ability and so you're building up your ability and so you're building up your ability to hold the breath for longer to hold the breath for longer to hold the breath for longer now partly that you can do that because now partly that you can do that because now partly that you can do that because you're blowing off carbon dioxide but in you're blowing off carbon dioxide but in you're blowing off carbon dioxide but in in doing this it creates a little bit of in doing this it creates a little bit of in doing this it creates a little bit of a stress response in your body already a stress response in your body already a stress response in your body already so your body's already primed to stress so your body's already primed to stress so your body's already primed to stress before you hit the cold stress before you hit the cold stress before you hit the cold stress so that's number one thing
